Research Prompts for 11/27

Research Prompt 1

1984: Characters, Space and Plot

By this point, you should be able to easily identify the seven or eight most important characters in the text (that we know of). Present brief descriptions of each. Draw a map of the world that Winston inhabits, including the principal locations covered in the text so far. Write out a brief description (less than fifty words) of the plot in three different ways: first, focusing on Winston; second, focusing on the Party control; third, focusing on the dynamic between Winston and Julia. Email the characters descriptions, map, and plot synopses before the start of class.

Research Prompt 2

1984 Bibliographical Entry

Pick one of the secondary texts from the bibliography that Stacy put together and create an annotated entry for the text, just as we did with The Brothers Karamazov. Purdue's OWL site provides examples and ideas about how to construct a bibliographical entry:

Please complete and email before class starts.

Research Prompt 3

What is at stake?

Pick out five moments of major conflict in the novel. Make a chart that illustrates what is at stake for the individuals presented in the novel in each moment you pick out. Describe, in each instance, what do the individuals stand to lose and what do they stand to gain? Follow up your thoughts with a hundred words on the motivations and forces that operate on a psychological level in the novel. Please complete and email before class starts.
