Narration
describes Fyodor’s lack of parental skills. Fyodors servant, Grigory is
introduced in the novel as caretaker to Dmitri.

Brief

Chapter 4: The Third Son, Alyosha
Narration
reveals ages of all three Karamozov brothers ages, 13 years prior to the
opening chapter of the book, when most of the action in the novel takes place.

escape a wicked world by choosing a path towards the light of love.

While
speaking about a Russian soldier who was tortured and killed because he refused
to denounce his faith in God, Smerdyakov adds his two cents and is criticized
for it.
Chapter 8: Over the Cognac
Chapter
begins with conversation between Fyodor and Grigory about a Russian soldier
tortured to death for refusing to denounce his faith in Christ. This story
paves the way for religious debate, a theme which runs throughout the course of
the novel.
Chapter 9: The Sensualists
Dmitri’s
forced entrance in hopes to find Grushenka leads to an action scene where
Dmitri attacks Grigory, then Fyodor.
Chapter 10: The Two Together
Alyosha’s
emotions border despair and dejection. Alyosha is haunted by the question “How

Book 4: Strains
Chapter 1: Father Ferapont
Alyosha
awakes with Elder Zosima in his cell
Chapter 2: At His Fathers
En route to
his father’s house, Alyosha wonders why his father had wanted him to come
without his brother Ivan knowing. Alyosha greets his father who is nursing
wounds sustained from Dmitri, and replies to his fathers inquiry about Zosima,
stating he may die today.
Chapter 3: He Gets Involved with Schoolboys
Alyosha is
thinking to himself at the beginning of this chapter and come to the
realization that he must find his brother, Dmitri
Chapter 4: At the Khokhlahov’s
Alyosha
arrives at the home of Madame Khokhlahov. Descriptive verse of the house and a
brief summary of how Madame Khokhlahov’s estates. Upon inquiry about elder
Zosima, Alyosha states that he will die today.
Chapter 5: Strain in the Drawing Room
Katerina
and Ivan are finishing their conversation when Alyosha arrives in the drawing
room. Seeing them together revives a thought in Alyosha’s head that Ivan may “win”
Katerina away from Dmitri.
Chapter 6: Strain in the Cottage
Given the
errand of going to Lake St. by Katerina, Alyosha finds himself with many
thoughts racing though his head. In addition to going to the Captian’s house to
give him money, Alyosha knows he must seek out his brother. Alyosha feels he is
running out of time to finish his errands in time to make it back to Zosima
before he dies.
Chapter 7: And in the Fresh Air
Alyosha and
the Captian go for a walk outside. The Captian regails Alyosha of the incident
in which his brother Dmitri attacked him and how deeply scarring the event was
on his son, Ilyusha
Book 5
Chapter 1: A Betrothal
Alyosha
returns to Madame Khokhlahov’s house to
discover Katerina’s hysterics from her encounter with Grushenka has resulted in
a fainting spell.
Chapter 2: Smerdyakov with a Guitar
Upon
fleeing from Madame Khoklhahov at the end of the previous chapter, Alyosha gets
the feeling that a terrible event is about to occur. The first paragraph of
this chapter is dedicated to Alyosha’s thoughts about the tasks that lie before
him, and the limited time frame he has in which to carry them out before his
elder’s impending death
Chapter 3: The Brothers Get Aquainted
Ivan is at
the tavern awaiting Alysoha
Chapter 4: Rebellion
Chapter
begins mid-conversation between Ivan and Alysoha. The brothers are discussing
Ivan’s doubt in “loving thy neighbor” which is characteristic of Ivan’s
personality and belief system.
Chapter 5: The Grand Inquisitor
Ivan is
preparing Alyosha for his poem “The Grand Inquisitor” by discussing other
literary works of the time period which included religion.
Chapter 6: A Rather Obscure One for the Moment
Ivans POV:
debating feelings of anguish, debating whether they are stemming from his
loathing of his father’s house or from his conversation with Alyosha.
Chapter 7: “Its Always Interesting to Talk with an Intelligent
Man”
Ivan enters
his father’s house, brushing past his father who comes out to meet him. On the
eve of his departure to Moscow, Ivan locks himself in his room as Fyodor paces
throughout the house awaiting knocks on the window, signifying Grushenka’s arrival.
Book 6
Chapter 1: The Elder Zosima and His Visitors
Alyosha
returns to the Monastery, finally making back to Zosima. Alyosha is surprised
to find Zosima sitting upright instead of dying.
Chapter 2: From the Life of the Heirmonk…
This
chapter is written as Alyosha’s memoir of Zosima, beginning with an account of
Zosima’s earliest memories of his dying brother.
Chapter 3: From Talks and Homilies of The Elder Zosaima
Continued
dictation of Alyosha’s memoir of Zosima. This memoir chapter begins with asking
the question “What is a monk?” and answers saying they are ones who keep the
image of Christ fair and undistorted.
Book 7
Chapter 1: The Odor of Corruption
Zosima’s
death has occurred and his body is being prepared for burial. Father Paissy performs
rituals over Zosima’s body: wiping his body and dressing his in monastic garb.
Chapter 2: An Opportune Moment
Father
Paissy contemplates Alyosha’s behavior at the end of the previous chapter.
Alyosha did nopt reply to father Paissy and walked out of the hermitage,
leading Paissy to consider whether of not Alyosha is “with those of little
faith”. The Narrator quickly tells the reader this is not so.
Chapter 3: An Onion
Description
of Grushenka’s residence and brief history of how Grushenka came to live there
Chapter 4: Cana of Galilee
Alyosha
arrives late in the evening to the Monastery and is led in through a special
entrance. Alyosha is greeted by Zosima’s coffin upon arriving at his cell and
begins praying.
Book 8:
Chapter 1: Kuzma Samsonov
Narration
of Dmitri’s running around with a possible brain fever for two days. The
narrator describes this time period in Dmitri’s life as a time when he was “trying
to save himself”, preceeding the horrible catastrophe determining his fate.
Chapter 2: Lyagavy
Dmitri is
en route to see Lyagavy, stopping at his house to grab a watch to pawn. The
narrator puts emphasis in the beginning of this chapter on the fact that Dmitri
has witnesses who saw him sell his watch and borrow money from his landlords.
The reasoning for which is important later in the story.
Chapter 3: Gold Mines
Dmitri
arrives at Grushenka’s house. Fearing this visit, Grushenka immediately has
Dmitri take her to Kuzma’s and tells him to pick her up later
Chapter 4: In the Dark
Action
scene of Dmitri running to Fyodor’s house in search for Grushenka. Beginning
paragraph details Dmitri’s actions upon arrival to the house: climbing over the
fence in the garden where Lizaveta once climbed over, and waiting in the dark,
peering into Fyodor’s window for any sign of Grushenka
Chapter 5: A Sudden Decision
Chapter
begins with Dmitri attacking Fenya
Chapter 6: Here I Come!
Dmitri is
traveling at night a fast pace towards Mokroye. Apropos to the title of this
chapter, Dmitri is racing towards Grushenka. Narration implies this is the same
evening which another set of important events (six chapter earlier) in the
novel take place when Alyosha embraces the earth following Zosima’s death.

Chapter 7: The Former and Indisputable One
Dmitri has
just found Grushenka and is approaching her. Tension mounts as the reader does
not know what to expect from Dmitri. Dmitri greets Grushenka and her companions
in a polite manner, despite the fact that he has brought two pistols with him
and has nearly killed Grigory in pursuit of Grushenka.
Chapter 8: Delerium
Dmitri and
Grushenka are celebrating and starting to drink. Grushenka states she wants to
get drunk while a chorus strikes up in the next room, un-invited guests arrive
and the troika with provisions Dmitri has spent a small fortune on arrives
Book 9
Chapter 1: The Start of the Official Perkhotin’s Career
Chapter
begins with Perkhotin following the trail of Dmitri’s destruction. His fist
stop is to see Fenya, learns of the suspected murder weapon (pestle) and
remembers seeing the blood on Dmitri’s hands. Perkhotin begins peicing things
together through the confession of Fenya and her grandmother.
Chapter 2: The Alarm
Mikhail
Makarovivh Makarov’s character is described. A former lieutenant who has been
in service in town for three years who has frequent dinner parties at his
house. He is described as a somewhat uneducated and carefree man with the soul
of a military man.
Chap 3: The Soul’s Journey through Torments. The First
Torment
Dmitri is
being interrogated at the beginning of the chapter, sitting in a room
surrounded by investigators. Dmitri screams suddenly he is “Not Guilty!” ,
follwed by Grushenka collapsing at Mikhail’s feet, crying she is the guilty
one, because she had driven Dmitri to commit murder.
Chapter 4: The Second Torment
Dmitri’s
interrogation continues with Nikolai Parfenovich taking over the questioning.
The text in the beginning of this chapter describes the prosecutor Ippolit
kirillovich and his remarkable psychological and oratorical talents.
Chapter 5: The Third Torment
This
chapter starts out with Dmitri detailing the events which took place while he
was hiding outside Fyodor’s house, looking for Grushenka and the thoughts that
passed through his mind while he was in waiting. The investigators lead Dmitri
to confess that these were the moments leading up to him “snatching his weapon
and…”. Dmitri immediately counteracts this insinuation by finishing their
sentence with what he thinks they want to hear “..Then? Oh then I killed him,
smashed him on the head and split his skull”
Chapter 6: The Prosecutor Catches Mitya
Upon being
asked to take of his clothing, Dmitri is offended of his treatment by the
prosecutors and repeatedly questions the necessity for taking his clothes off.
Chapter 7: Mitya’s Great Secret. Met with Hisses
In the
first sentence of this chapter, Dmitri confesses that the money in question was
his to begin with, stating he had sewn it into an amulet he was wearing around
his neck
Chapter 8: The Evidence of the Witnesses. The Wee One
Chapter
begins with interrogation of witnesses and the narrator addressing the reader,
stating that all the evidence obtained so far is against Dmitri. The
interrogation of the witnesses begins with the Inn keeper Trifon Borisich
Chapter 9: Mitya is Taken Away
The details
of the interrogation are being summed up in detail, resulting in the decision
to commit Dmitri to prison.
Book 10
Chapter 1: Kolya Krasotkin
Descriptive
verse of a freezing cold November, followed by a decription of Kolya’s parents
and the introduction of Kolya’s character. Kolya is decribed as a god student,
terrifically strong and brave as well as persistant in character and bold in
spirit.
Chapter 2: Kids
Koyla
described sitting at home awaiting the return of the maid Agafya, while looking
after “the squirts” as he calls them. The beginning of this chapter is
dedicated to the description of the characters of Kolya’s world and his
relation to them: The maid, two children, his dog, and the squirt’s parents.
Chapter 3: A Schoolboy
Kolya walks
out into the freezing cold with his dog Perezvon in search of Smurov
Chapter 4: Zhuchka
Kolya is
antipating meeting Alyosha, and in doing so questions his appearance. Kolya is
criticizing his features when Alyosha appears, for the first time, in
non-monastic clothing.
Chapter 5: At Ilyusha’s Bedside
The
interior of the captain’s house is filled with visitors who have come to see
Ilyusha
Chapter 6: Precocity
Kolya and
Alyosha are at Ilyusha’s bedside. Alyosha states that Ilyusha’s death is
imminent. Kolya begins speaking to Alyosha about his faith in God.
Chapter 7: Ilyusha
As Ilyusha’s
doctor is leaving, Ilyusha’s father, in despair, inquires about the fate of his
son. The Doctor replies to be prepared for anything, and that Ilyusha’s dire
situation no longer depends on him.
Book 11
Chapter 1: At Grushenkas
Alyosha en
route to Grushenka at her request from Fenya. Beginning of chapter details
Grushenka’s unrest in the time that has passed since Dmitri’s arrest. Grushenka
has been ill for about five weeks
Chap 2: An Ailing Little Foot
Alyosha
arrives at Madame Khokhlahov’s house to find her with a swollen foot. The narration then accounts for the events
which lead Alyosha to her and the letter sent by Liza which aroused Alyosha’s
interest.
Chapter 3: A Little Demon
Alyosha
encounters Liza’s room, noticing she looks more frail than the last time he saw
her
Chapter 4: A Hymn and a Secret
Alyosha
arrives at the prison where Dmitri is being held. The narration explains that
after the investigation, exceptions were made for Dmitri to see visitors, the
only one being Alosha, Grushenka and Rakitin.
Chapter 5: Not You! Not You!
Alyosha
finds Ivan at Katerina’s house. Alyosha relays Dmitri’s message that she should
not give any evidence in court.
Chapter 6: The First Meeting with Smerdyakov
Narration
of accounts of Ivan’s talks with Smerdyakov from throughout the novel, followed
by an account of why Ivan was delayed in returning from Moscow following his
father’s death.
Chapter 7: The Second Visit to Smerdyakov
Ivan finds
Smedyakov at Maria’s house. Descriptive verse of the room Smerdyakov is staying
in.
Chapter 8: The Third Meeting with Smerdyakov
As Ivan
makes his way through the blizzard en route to see Smerdyakov. Ivan is
described by narration as being full of hatred, taking out his aggression on
peasants along the way
Chapter 9: The Devil. Ivan Fyodorovich’s Nightmare
The
narrator directly addresses the reader, stating he is not a doctor but will
attempt to explain Ivan’s illness. The narrator explains Ivan is on the verge
of a brain fever. The doctor which sees Ivan concludes he is suffering from
something similar to a brain disorder
Chapter 10: “He Said That!”
Alyosha
informs Ivan that Smerdyakov has taken his own life. Ivan conveys he already
knew and begins speaking in an odd manner to Alyosha, who implores Ivan to sit
on the sofa because he is raving.
