What are some different kinds of love: Unrequited,
unconditional, obsessive, “tough love”, codependent (unhealthy),
interdependent, “puppy love”
“Tainted love”
which was described as starting out healthy and becoming obsessive love or
codependent love.
Codependent love is described as being unhealthy as the
participants are feeding off each other’s negative qualities.
Love is about relationships just like power could be
described. They aren’t something that can be described bluntly ie: “This is a
story about love”
What ways do we have of understanding love in this text?
Love is
used to show codependency and women are also objectified.
Story is a love triangle between grusheenka, katerina,
Dmitri, fyador, alexi and ivan
Gruskenka is the object of affection, she is objectified.
Grushenka offers sex, to be pleasing, and fickle.
Katerina is codependent upon Dmitri, She wishes to save him.
She also wants Ivan to need her help. She offers image and control, an
“Institute girl”.
Alexi believes the letter, accepts it as true and plays no
games.
The point is it’s not enough to say the stories a love story
or that they are “in” love. You can analyze anything, the novel is strong in
characters and setting but relationships are a strong part in understanding the
characters.
Excerpts from group prompts
“Man ho said more then 3 times”
“He slaps dat old ho”
“Stories a hot mess and makes us feel better about
ourselves. Fyador is the spectacle that makes people feel better about their
own lives”
*Would like to discuss more about what Stacey and Kathleen
brought up*
Creates
guidelines ex: Fyador in chamber explaining to zosima “Book within a book”
“19th
century orphan novel vs form of morality play”
