Bleak House: Basic Overview

Chapter Summaries
Chapter 55-  Mrs. Bagnet discovers that George's mother is Mrs. Rouncewell. Mrs. Rouncewell does everything in her power to help prove George's innocence. She does so by confiding in Lady Dedlock that she has found her son but is being accused of murdering Tulkinghorn. She asks Lady Dedlock to help her in anyway possible. Lady Dedlock reads a letter addressed to her but it turns out to be an article about the murder. Her name and 'Murderess' is written at the end. Mr. Guppy comes to Lady Dedlock and tell her that Esther asked him to cease all efforts in finding out about her past and that Tulkinghorn was working against him. He also warns Lady Dedlock that people will come to make money off of the letters between her and the captain. Lady Dedlock flees because more people know about her secret. She leaves a letter for Sir Leicester that she didn't murder Tulkinghorn.

Chapter 56- Sir Leicester is very sick. When he asks for Lady Dedlock, he is told that she has gone out. Mrs. Rouncewell gives him the letter from Lady Dedlock. Sir Leicester sends for Bucket and tell him that he forgives Lady Dedlock and that he needs to find her. Bucket tells Mrs. Rouncewell that George will be fine. Bucket finds the handkerchief with Esther's name in Lady Dedlock's chambers. He goes to Mr. Jarndyce and shows him the letter and says that he needs Esther to go with him to find Lady Dedlock because he is afraid that Lady Dedlock will kill herself.

Chapter 57- Esther and Bucket go on to search for Lady Dedlock. On the way he investigates a drowning. As they head toward Bleak House Bucket tells Esther he took Jo away to protect Lady Dedlock because he was telling too many people about who he had led to burial ground. No one has seen Lady Dedlock at Bleak House. They go to the brick maker's cottage which turns out to be where Jenny, Liz,and their husbands live. They try to get information about the lady that had been there the night before. The husbands are uncooperative but tell them that the lady took a handkerchief from Jenny and went on her way. Bucket believes that Lady Dedlock gave them her watch. They continue on their search but Bucket loses the trail. Esther faints. But Bucket realizes something and they return to London quickly.

Chapter 58- People begin to talk about what has happened between Lady Dedlock and Sir Leicester. Mrs. Rouncewell believes that Lady Dedlock will not be returning even tho Sir Leicester has asked for her bedroom to be prepared for her arrival. Sir Leicester meets George. He tells George, Mrs. Rouncewell, and Volumnia that he has a stroke and that if he continues to get worse to the point that he cannot communicate, they need to tell Lady Dedlock that his feelings for her have not changed.

Chapter 59-  Bucket and Esther reach London. Esther thinks they have given up on Lady Dedlock, but Bucket tells her he has reasons for coming back to London. They meet with Mr. Woodcourt and go to Mr.Snagbys house to find Guster crying. Bucket needs information from Guster so he sends Woodcourt to calm her down. Woodcourt gets the letter which is in Lady Dedlock's handwriting. It says that she went to the cottage, Jenny helped her, and that there is nothing else left to do but die. Guster was given the letter by woman asking for directions to the burial ground of Krook's lodger. Esther and Bucket rush to the burial ground. At the gate a woman is on the ground. Esther thinks it is Jenny but Bucket tells her that he thinks Jenny and Lady Dedlock traded clothing. The woman on the ground turns out to be Lady Dedlock.
Chapter 60- Esther becomes sick in London and Mrs. Woodcourt stays with her. Mr. Jarndyce offers that they stay in London so that Esther can be close to Ada and so that he can keep track of Richard. Esther is somewhat bothered with Mrs. Woodcourt staying with them. Esther sees Ada everyday and believes that Ada does not know that Richard is destroying himself. Miss Flite has made Richard the executor of her estate. One night Vholes joins Esther, Ada, and Richard for dinner. When Richard and Ada are not around he tells Esther that their marriage was a bad decision and that Richard is not doing well. When Vholes leaves, Richard talks of Vholes making Esther think that he is beginning to see Vholes true nature. Woodcourt arrives and goes on a walk with Richard. Ada tells Esther that she is pregnant and hopes that it will "save" Richard but shes afraid that he will die before it is born.
Chapter 61- Esther visits Ada everyday and sometimes finds Skimpole. She confronts Skimpole about his attitude and Jo. She believes his careless attitude is not good for Ada, but he agrees to stay away from Richard and Ada. Esther tells him that he betrayed Mr. Jarndyce by taking money from Bucket to show him where Jo was. Skimpole explains what happened. After that Esther says she never saw Skimpole again and that he died five years afterwards and wrote a book about himself. Richard's condition is getting worse. Woodcourt confesses his love to Esther and she tells him that she is to marry Mr. Jarndyce.
Chapter 62- Mr. Jarndyce and Esther agree that they will get married in a month. Bucket arrives with Smallweed. Smallweed found a Jarndyce will amongst Krook's property. Smallweed is promised money if the will is of any value. The will is given to Mr. Jarndyce. Mr. Jarndyce and Esther go to see Mr. Kenge. he determines that the will was written before any of the other wills that are currently in the case. However the will gives less to Mr. Jarndyce and more to Ada and Richard. Vholes agrees that it is important. The case is to be brought up again next month.
Chapter 63- Georges shooting gallery is closed and George lives at Chesney Wold. George reunites with his brother at Rouncewell Factory and goes to meet Watt, his nieces, and Rosa. George wants to be removed from Mrs. Rouncewell's will and will not join his brother in business. Before George leaves he asks his brother to read a letter he wrote. It is to Esther and it explains that he had received a letter with instructions. But he gave up the letter to provide as a sample of handwriting. If George had known the writer was still alive he would've helped him but the person was said to have drowned. George meant no harm. He sends the letter and goes back to Chesney Wold.
Chapter 64- Mr. Jarndyce gives Esther money to plan the wedding. The wedding wont happen until after the case appears in court. Mr. Jarndyce goes with Woodcourt to attend to business. he sends a letter to Esther with travel information for her to meet him in the country. When she arrives, Jarndyce has bought Woodcourt a house as a token of gratitude and needs Esther to help fix it up. Jarndyce shows Esther the house the next day and it everything that Esther would every want. Jarndyce explains to Esther that when Woodcourt returned that their marriage would never make Esther happy. Woodcourt confessed his love of Esther before he knew Jarndyce proposed to Esther. Jaryndyce knew that Woodcourt would confess his love to Esther but that Esther would still marry Jarndyce. he had Mrs. Woodcourt watch her to make sure this was true. Jarndyce gives Esther to Woodcourt. The next day the news is given to Richard to Ada. Guppy arrives to propose to Esther again but Jarndyce denies him.
Chapter 65- Esther is on her way to court and stops to talk to Caddy. When they get to court they find out that the lawsuit is finally over. The entire estate has been used up in legal costs. Esther goes home to tell Jarndyce and they go to over to Richard and Ada's place. they find out that Woodcourt found Richard in court almost unconscious. when Richard tried to yell at the judge he had a mouth full of blood. he now resting on the couch at home. They begin to talk about the future and Richard says he wants to see Esther's new place. he then dies.
Chapter 66- Chesney wold is quiet. Sir Leicester is alive but still very sick. George is there with Mrs. Rouncewell taking care of Sir Leicester. There are some visitors but for the most part the house is very quiet.
Chapter 67- Esther has been married for seven years now. Ada and her baby boy stays with her. The baby helped Ada heal. Esther has two daughters. Charley is married. Caddy is also a mother. An addition was made to the house for Jarndyce. Woodcourt is a successful doctor and Esther herself is well-respected. Esther ends her story saying that the people around her are beautiful and begins to speculate something but never tells us what it is. 
There are no new characters.
